Our Winter Garden
When we look at our winter garden it is mostly through the windows, in the warmth and comfort of our house.
After it stops snowing, I go out to shovel my way from the patio door to the end of the garden: to the shed, that I call my cigar shack, on one side, and to the recycle bin on the other side.
Maria doesn't spend a lot of time in our winter garden, only long enough for me to take a picture of her.
No matter how cold it is, birds always come to eat the seeds that we leave for them in the bird feeder. Some are red cardinals; others are small and tiny little sparrows.
Sometimes, a night, when it’s very cold, a young rabbit comes near the door. I give him carrots and cabbage. They say that hares and rabbits are very resilient to the cold, but no matter what they say, I can’t help but thinking that they must be freezing outside.
When we look at our cats looking at the snow falling gently or swirling wildly through the windows, we are glad that they are indoor with us, and not lonely and cold outside.
There is something about the cold and darkness of winter that makes the body and soul feel cozy and content when we are inside. It makes us and the cats feel more…together.
