To Ease the Passing of Time

One day, after the rising water will have drowned so many cities and the fires will have burned so many trees, when only a few people will be saved from the heat, tornadoes, droughts and famines, after the ice will have melted into the ocean, and the green valleys will have turned into sand, when people my age will be long gone and have returned to dust with their old songs and ancient memories, a young man will meet a young woman and they will smile at each other, and in that smile there will be hope and redemption.

And the young man will sing a love song to his wife, a song never sung before but that will sound so much like the love songs of when we were young. The same story will happen to other survivors in a few other places around the world; and everything will start again, slowly, like it started a long, long time ago, thousands of years before we were born.
