To Ease the Passing of Time

To Ease the Passing of Time

A Refuge for the Soul

It’s like being in a big mansion with a lot of people everywhere. Some are in the living room or in the dining room flirting or discussing politics or social issues. Many are bragging while others are politely listening. Others are upstairs in the bedrooms getting acquainted in the most intimate way. You can hear them moaning and screaming. The music is loud, way too loud. You’d like to be somewhere else, anywhere else. And then you see a closed door. It’s a small door like a closet door. You open it, and there’s a small balcony. You shut the door behind you, and there is silence, complete silence. You stand on the balcony, and you look up at the sky. You see the moon, and you see the stars, and everything becomes so peaceful inside of you. And you tell yourself that you’d like to stay there a little longer, and that you are in no rush to return to the real world.

It’s like being on the busy street of a busy city on a very busy day. It’s hot, so very hot; and it’s also very humid and hazy. And the traffic is frigging crazy. People are honking their horns and yelling insults at one another. On the sidewalk where you are walking, lost souls are asking for money to buy drugs while dealers are trying to sell drugs to make money. And then you see the door of a small café. You walk in not knowing what to expect because you’ve never been there before. As soon as you step in, you can feel the fresh air, and you can hear smooth jazz playing softly. The waitress is pretty and friendly; and when she smiles at you, it’s like she’s really smiling at you. Your cappuccino is tasty and foamy. You tell yourself that you’d like to stay there a little longer, and that you are in no rush to return to the real world.

It’s near the end of a busy day. At work, you had to assess, evaluate and process a lot of things. You had to reflect on the past, and you had to plan for the future. You had to deal with all kinds of issues, and you had to deal with other employees. You went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch with a group of colleagues. It was Rachel’s birthday. Some drank too much wine and started arguing about hockey and politics. After supper, you watched a little bit of TV to know what’s going on in the world. They talked about the war in Ukraine and politics. It was all the same frigging bullshit. You head was spinning. You took out and old CD. You don’t play your CDs often any more. Since you’ve got your Google Home, you became lazy. All you have to do is ask, “Hey Google, play this or play that!” Anyway, it was an old CD that you had not listened to since God knows when.

As soon as it started, the music took you to a place far away. It’s like you were entering another world. You were no longer on this earth worrying and dealing with your daily problems and your anxiety. And when the singer started to sing, it’s like you were floating in the air like a bird. For a short while, you were in a place between heaven and earth, between time and eternity, a place where you knew for certain that not only do you have a body and a mind, but that you also have a soul.
